Somethin’ To Taco Bout – Gluten-Free Taco Seasoning

Somethin’ To Taco Bout is a flavor-forward taco seasoning that pulls its weight like a real spice blend should. It starts with a layered chile base (ancho, guajillo, chipotle morita, and New Mexico lumbre) and lands in that warm, earthy zone where cumin and oregano do the heavy lifting. That's where it gets interesting: cocoa powder adds depth, annatto brings a subtle rounded warmth and color, then cinnamon shows up in the background instead of taking over. The result is bold enough for tacos, but flexible enough to work as a dry rub when you’re grilling chicken thighs, roasting pork, or building a weeknight burrito bowl.

If you’re tired of packet seasoning that tastes flat, metallic, or overly salty, this is your upgrade. It’s gluten-free, vegan friendly, low sodium, sugar-free, and made without MSG or fillers like corn flour. Use it for Taco Tuesday, sure, but also for sheet pan veggies, black beans, breakfast potatoes, shrimp, skirt steak, tofu, and anything that needs a smoky, savory push without turning into a salt bomb.

Flavor Profile

Earthy chile-forward warmth with cumin and garlic, a smoky edge, and hints of cinnamon and cocoa that round everything out.

Ingredients

Chile Powder (Ancho, Guajillo, Chipotle Morita, New Mexico Lumbre), Sea Salt, Cumin, Granulated Garlic, Granulated Onion, Oregano, Cocoa Powder, Filé Powder (Sassafras, Thyme), White Pepper, Annatto Seed, Cinnamon

Suggested Uses

How to use it: For classic taco meat, start with 1 tbsp per 1 lb of ground beef, turkey, chicken, beans, or plant-based crumbles. Bloom the seasoning in a little oil for 30 seconds, then cook as usual. Let it rest 5 minutes before serving. For grilling and roasting, use 1 tbsp per 1 lb as a dry rub (add a light coat of oil first), then rest 15–30 minutes. Works great on the grill, in a skillet, or in the oven. Best paired with Jalapeño Business or The Magical Mop. Want to browse the whole category? Start here: Spice Blends & Barbecue Rubs.

Proteins - Ground beef, chicken thighs, pulled pork, shrimp, flank steak, skirt steak

Plant-based - Tofu, tempeh, black beans, lentils, roasted cauliflower, mushrooms, sweet potatoes

Sauce Pairings - Build tacos, bowls, and grilled proteins with a bright finish from Jalapeño Business and/or add tangy, smoky bite with The Magical Mop. If you want a sweet-tangy contrast on chicken or pork, try The Clevelander.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Somethin’ To Taco Bout gluten-free?

Yes. It’s a gluten-free taco seasoning made with real spices and no fillers.

How much taco seasoning should I use per pound of meat?

Start with 1 tablespoons per 1 pound of ground meat (or plant-based crumbles). Adjust to taste, especially if you like a bolder chile profile.

Is it spicy?

It has a warm chile kick, but it’s built for flavor first. Think smoky and savory with heat that doesn’t drown out the food.

Is it vegan friendly and low sodium?

Yes. It’s vegan friendly and low sodium. Season your food, then add salt to taste if you want more.

What else can I use it on besides tacos?

Chicken, pork, beef, tofu, roasted vegetables, beans, burrito bowls, and even breakfast potatoes. It also works as a dry rub for grilling. We have a whole article on it in our Brian's Tips and Tricks blog.

The Life of a Seasoning Mix

I couldn’t edit my original review. I’m back again to let it be known that I have officially gone through several bottles of this. I was highly upset when I recently ran low (I normally buy at the markets and didn’t have time to wait for an event.) I was so desperate, I ordered it (shipping costs and all) and was well prepared for the wait. The package arrived extremely quickly. I believe it was only two days. I seriously can’t imagine using those store bought packets anymore. I do add some salt along with this one, but I appreciate that this brand is conscientious of those with health needs, such as low sodium diets. I put it on impossible beef to keep mine vegan. It makes even better breakfast tacos, crunch wraps, breakfast burritos, etc. This seasoning is the star of a taco.

Taco seasoning

Good product but nothing says "buy me again" as there are dozens of very similar flavors in multiple markets without shipping costs or waiting for the shipment to arrive. Sorry BTL. But I do like the product.

Tastebuds are unique to one’s taste.

I was really excited to try this product , unfortunately, I was a bit disappointed, as the Cinnamon was a bit overpowering ,
the rest of the ingredient's laid dormant .
Now it might have been this particular batch ?

Hey George!

Thanks for the review, we appreciate the feedback and are sorry to hear about your disappointment with our taco seasoning - we definitely don't aim for unhappy customers, but we understand that everyone's tastebuds are different.

Cheers~

Delicious!

This is 10x better than whatever they put in the taco kits. The flavor is deeper and less salty. My picky 10 year old will only eat tacos with "Something to Taco Bout" - so I HAVE to have this on hand! It's a staple in our house!

Chef’s Choice

From one chef to another and all if the other great cooks out there.....this Taco seasoning is a game changer. It's better than my Taco seasoning blend and I'm not too proud to say that. Those warm notes and slight hints of coffee and cocoa are what help make this the perfect blend for any protein (even tofu) for Taco night. P.s. ....add it to your meatloaf!
