Somethin’ Somethin’ Sauce – Sweet & Tangy Barbecue Sauce

Somethin’ Somethin’ Sauce is a sweet and tangy barbecue sauce with more going on than straight sugar and smoke. It starts with a rich tomato base, then brings in green chile for a mild bite, cinnamon for warmth, and sumac for a bright, fruity tang. The finish is where it gets interesting: espresso coffee adds a grown-up bitterness that keeps the sweetness in check and makes the sauce taste layered instead of just cloyingly sweet. This is the bottle you grab when you want “classic BBQ” energy, but you also want people to ask what that extra flavor is. Use it as a glaze, a finishing sauce, or a dunker. Brush it on chicken thighs in the last few minutes on the grill. Coat ribs after the bark sets. Stir it into pulled pork, spoon it over smoked tofu, or toss it with meatballs for game day. It’s bold and unique flavor plays well with smoke, char, and slow cooker comfort food.

This one’s for cooks who like a sauce that does the work. You can run it straight out of the bottle, or use it as a base for your own signature move. If you’re building a BBQ spread, it covers the crowd-pleasers and still keeps the flavor nerds happy. Great for weeknights, big cooks, tailgates, and any table that likes a little tang with the sweet.

Suggested Uses

How to use it: For ribs and chicken, apply during the last 5–10 minutes of cooking and let it set before serving. For pulled pork, start with 2–3 tbsp per pound of cooked meat, toss, then add more to taste. For meatballs, add 1 cup sauce per 2 lbs meatballs and warm on low until glossy. Best paired with Somethin’ For Rubbin’ or Somethin’ To Cry About.

Proteins - Ribs, pulled pork, pork chops, chicken thighs, wings, brisket sandwiches, meatballs, shrimp

Plant-based - Tofu, jackfruit, cauliflower “wings,” grilled mushrooms, roasted sweet potatoes, black bean bowls

Sauce Pairings - For a saucy BBQ plate, use Somethin’ Somethin’ as the sweet-tang anchor, then add contrast with The Magical Mop and/or The Clevelander.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Somethin’ Somethin’ Sauce a sweet barbecue sauce or a tangy barbecue sauce?

Both. It’s sweet up front with a bright tang from sumac and vinegar, plus a coffee finish that keeps it balanced instead of sugary.

How spicy is it?

Mild. The green chile adds a little bite, but it’s built for all-purpose BBQ, not heat chasing.

When should I add BBQ sauce to ribs or chicken?

Add it near the end so it sets without burning. Brush on during the last 5–10 minutes, then let it tack up before serving.

Can I use it in a slow cooker?

Yes. It’s excellent for pulled pork and meatballs. Start with a smaller amount, cook, then add more at the end for a fresher tang.

Is it gluten-free and vegan-friendly?

Yes. It’s gluten-free and vegan-friendly, and it contains soy.

Jalapeño poppers

I made the poppers without the something something sauce, and everyone loved them.
I decided to get some of this sauce and we all loved it even more.
Well worth the money for this recipe.

Nothin Better and Somethin Somethin To Feel Great About!

I love this sauce! What is great is how it appeals to every person I have introduced it to. One of my favorite things about this sauce is that not only is it balanced but it is not too thick! When sauces are too think, not only is half the bottle gone in one cook, but it over powers your cook. This is the perfect blend of flavor, texture, and consistency. Well done BT Leighs!

Game changer

I've tried hundreds of Brand's of sauces over the years including making my own. I can honestly say nothing compares to the Somethin Somethin sauce, I buy the half gallon size now. It's a winner 🏆

I had to open the bottle to sample. I can't wait to get me some ribs on the smoker now. I just dipped my chicken in this sauce and game over. I have several different sauces in the cupboard. They will be there for a while.

Thank you for the kind words! Wait until that sauce gets hit with smoke - hard to go back!

A tangy, unique twist on a classic

This sauce is my new favorite. It's sweet, but not too sweet, and the spice blend is warm and unique. Is that cardamom or cinnamon? Maybe a hint of mustard or cumin? It goes well with chicken, pork, and most veggie burgers (especially with bread and butter pickles!).
