Somethin’ For Rubbin’ - Sweet & Savory Barbecue Rub

Somethin’ For Rubbin’ is a sweet and savory barbecue rub built for real BBQ pitmasters and weekend grillers. It starts with turbinado sugar for bark, then layers in smoked paprika, guajillo, and ancho chile, black pepper, garlic, cumin, and herbs for a finish that stays balanced instead of cloying. This BBQ seasoning is the one you grab when you want big flavor without babysitting a complicated blend.

Use it as a dry rub on ribs, pork shoulder, chicken thighs, wings, or brisket. It also works on shrimp, roasted vegetables, potatoes, and tofu when you want that barbecue profile without a heavy sauce.

Flavor Profile

Sweet and smoky up front, savory through the middle, with mild chile warmth and aromatic herbs on the finish. Built to build bark and ideal for low and slow.

Ingredients

Turbinado Sugar, Sea Salt, Smoked Paprika, Chile Powder (Guajillo, Ancho), Black Pepper, Granulated Garlic, Cumin, Thyme, Sumac, Oregano

Suggested Uses

How to use it: For most meats, start around 1 to 2 tablespoons per pound. Let it sit 20 to 30 minutes before cooking so it sweats into the surface. Smoke it, grill it, air-fry it, or roast it. If you’re saucing, this rub plays especially well under mustard-forward or classic sweet BBQ sauces like The Clevelander or Somethin’ Somethin’ Sauce.

Proteins - Ribs, pork shoulder, pork tenderloin, chicken thighs, wings, drumsticks, brisket, burgers, shrimp, salmon

Plant-based - Roasted cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, potatoes, tofu, chickpeas

Sauce Pairings - Best paired with The Clevelander for a mustard-maple BBQ finish, or our Somethin’ Somethin’ Sauce for classic sweet BBQ.

Somethin' for Rubbin' is my new bff in the kitchen!

To steal a slogan, we put ...this rub... on everything :) We've put it on chicken, beef and (best of all) on pork - so so good! Always tastes fresh, not like mass marketed spices that taste like they've been sitting in a hot warehouse for who knows how long. Awesome flavors and brings out the best savory depths of your favorite proteins. Makes dinner simple but tastes like you spent hours.

Thanks L J! We appreciate the kind words!

Great

This has been great on pork and chicken so far. Has an earthy taste but a hint of sweet aftertaste. Nothing is too heavy on this. Paired with a good bbq sauce makes it awesome.

I appreciate you Tanya! Thanks for the review!

This stuff is really good.

Every time I cook using this, the food always comes out amazing. When I ran out and went back to my standard seasoning, it was pretty disappointing. I promptly came back to the site and ordered the large container so I wouldn't run out again anytime soon.

Another Winner

This is my new go to rub for seafood. Bye bye Old Bay. I've used it on crab, shrimp and Mahi mahi and everyone was asking about the flavor and how great everything tasted. I also used it to season ground chuck for making sloppy joes and it's a winner 🏆

Chicken

Used this on a bunch of chicken I bought and it was absolutely fantastic. Very mild spice that’s still very present, with a nice sweet finish. This rub has a special sugar in it that leaves a really delicious sweetness on your tongue after every bite. Can’t recommend enough.

Sweet, smoky, and spicy!

This rub goes well on anything! It's a little sweet, so it plays particularly well with things that do too... chicken or pork goes without saying, but it's amazing on roasted root vegetables, especially sweet potatoes or carrots. The spicy-smoky flavor goes really well with a lot of fall classics, like butternut squash!
